Taskforce urges dolphin watchers to join campaign for health

The Gippsland Lakes and Catchment Taskforce is urging Lakes residents and visitors to report all sightings of dolphins as part of an ongoing campaign to ensure the health of our unique aquatic mammals.

The Taskforce has called on the general public to lend its support to the Dolphin Research Institute's ongoing program of monitoring, reseach and management of the Lake's approximately 60 resident dolphins.

Speak up for Landcare

In 2008, the newly elected Rudd government undertook changes to the way the Federal Government funded Natural Resource Management(NRM) in Australia.

The Government announced that the National Heritage Trust, National Landcare Program and Envirofund funding would all be rolled into one scheme called "Caring for Our Country".

The Caring for Our Country Business Plan 2009-2010 was released in early December 2008 and this outlined the priorities for funding.

Legal action commenced against Madden over Bastion Point

Legal action, against Planning Minister Justin Madden's decision to ignore the recommendations of the Bastion Point EES independent Panel Inquiry, has commenced.

On August 4, 2009 the Environment Defenders Office, acting for Friends of Mallacoota Inc, filed a case in the Supreme Court for Judicial review of Minister Madden's decision.

Funds are needed to mount the case. Donations can be made via credit card on the Donations page of the save Bastion Point website http://www.savebastionpoint.org

What do you want the State Government to do about climate change?

The Victorian Government will begin consultation next week to find out what the Victorian community expects them to be doing about climate change.

Last month Premier Brumby released the first stage of the Victorian Government's plan - their Climate Change Green Paper. This can be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/nq6bql.

Public Forums will be held across the State over the following weeks. The nearest one to East Gippsland will take place in Morwell, August 28, 10am till 12pm. You need to register to attend these forums. Call 1800 463 684 or register online at: http://tinyurl.com/ntdfhg.

Council votes to proceed with breakwater

At the July 7 Council meeting, a motion calling on Council to follow the Inquiry Panel recommendations by forming a community consultative group to examine a low impact solution for Bastion Point, was defeated.

The motion was proposed by Councillor Bill Gamble and supported by Mayor Mendie Urie.

Instead, Councillor Jane Rowe, 'amended' the Motion, so that it read the reverse; that Council accepted Minister Madden's decision, and would proceed with the breakwater option 3b. This motion was then passed after further modification with the votes of Councillors Rowe, Freshwater, Neal, Anderson and Ellis.

  • Investment Framework for Environmental Resources (INFFER).
  • Fish populations and seagrass condition of the Gippsland Lakes.
  • Gippsland Lakes Hydrodynamic Model.
